How to Read (and Fix) Google Search Console Coverage Reports

Read GSC's Page indexing report to see which URLs Google indexes, why others are excluded, then fix the top exclusion reasons and validate.

How to Read (and Fix) Google Search Console Coverage Reports

TL;DR

Google Search Console's Coverage report (now called "Page indexing") shows which of your URLs Google has indexed and which it skipped, grouped by reason. To read it, open Indexing → Pages, check the "Not indexed" reasons at the bottom, click the largest one, fix the root cause on those URLs, then hit "Validate Fix" to ask Google to recheck.

Start with the two top-level numbers: "Indexed" and "Not indexed." Indexed pages can appear in search; not-indexed pages cannot. Don't panic at a big not-indexed count — for most Shopify and small-business sites, 40-70% of URLs are legitimately excluded (tag pages, filtered collection URLs, cart links). Your job is to separate the pages that *should* rank from the noise.

Scroll to the "Why pages aren't indexed" table and sort by page count. Each row is a specific reason. Attack the biggest row first, because fixing one root cause often clears hundreds of URLs at once. Ignore rows that only contain URLs you never wanted indexed anyway.

Learn the five reasons you'll actually see most. "Crawled – currently not indexed" means Google saw the page but judged it too thin or duplicate — improve the content or merge it. "Discovered – currently not indexed" usually means crawl-budget or server-speed issues on large catalogs. "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" and "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" are canonical problems — check that each product/variant points to one canonical URL. "Excluded by 'noindex' tag" means a robots meta tag or theme setting is blocking it, often by accident.

For Shopify merchants specifically, most noise comes from `/collections/*?filter=` and `?variant=` URLs, plus default tag and vendor pages. These are fine to leave excluded. The dangerous case is a real product or blog post landing under "noindex" or "Crawled – not indexed" — those are lost revenue. Use the URL Inspection tool on one affected URL to confirm the exact cause before you change anything.

Fix at the source, not one URL at a time. Remove stray `noindex` tags in your theme's `theme.liquid` or SEO app settings, set correct canonicals, add internal links to orphaned pages so Google can find them, and beef up thin pages with 150+ words of genuine content. For "Discovered – not indexed" on big sites, improve server response time (aim under 600ms) and submit a clean XML sitemap containing only canonical, indexable URLs.

After deploying a fix, click into the reason, press "Validate Fix," and let Google recrawl a sample. Validation typically takes 1-4 weeks, and the report data itself lags 2-3 days, so don't refresh hourly. Track the indexed count monthly. If a page still won't index after a clean fix, it's usually a quality signal — the page competes poorly, and no technical tweak replaces making it genuinely more useful than what already ranks.

Frequently asked

What's the difference between the Coverage and Page indexing reports?

They're the same report — Google renamed "Coverage" to "Page indexing" in 2023. It lives under the Indexing section in Search Console.

Is a high "Not indexed" count bad?

Not necessarily. Most sites correctly exclude filter URLs, tag pages, and duplicates. It's only a problem when real products or articles you want to rank appear in the not-indexed list.

How long does "Validate Fix" take?

Google usually completes validation within 1-4 weeks, depending on site size and crawl frequency. The report data also lags 2-3 days, so avoid checking it hourly.

Why is my page "Crawled – currently not indexed"?

Google fetched it but judged it too thin, duplicate, or low-value to index. Improve the content depth, add internal links, or consolidate it with a stronger page.
