The Ground Has Shifted

In March 2025, Google rolled out AI Overviews to the majority of searches globally. For the SEO industry, it was the most significant change since the Penguin update. Click-through rates for informational queries dropped 30–60% almost overnight.

The SEOs who treated this as a death sentence missed the opportunity. The ones who adapted are thriving.

What Stopped Working

Thin informational content. The classic "write 2,000 words on X topic" strategy is largely broken for informational queries. AI Overviews now answer the question directly. Users don't click through.

Exact-match anchor text. Google's understanding of semantic relevance is now sophisticated enough that keyword stuffing in anchors actively signals manipulation.

Article farms. Sites that built authority through volume rather than depth are seeing 40–70% traffic declines.

What Still Works (and Why)

1. Transactional and Commercial Intent Keywords

AI Overviews rarely appear for keywords with purchase intent. "Best SEO tools 2026," "hire Webflow developer," "SEO agency Jakarta" — these still show traditional blue links at the top. This is where organic traffic has consolidated.

Across our client portfolio, transactional keyword traffic is actually up 18% YoY. The informational traffic loss hasn't touched commercial intent.

2. Topical Authority at Depth

Google's Helpful Content System rewards genuine expertise. Not breadth — depth. A site with 10 exceptional articles on Webflow development outperforms a site with 200 mediocre ones.

We rebuilt one client's blog from 180 posts to 34 cornerstone pieces. Organic traffic increased 40% in 4 months.

3. First-Party Data and Original Research

AI can't generate original research. Proprietary data, original surveys, case studies with real numbers — this content performs because it's genuinely unreplicable. It earns links naturally. It gets cited in AI Overviews (which drives brand awareness even without clicks).

We've started conducting quarterly surveys with our clients' customers and publishing the data. The resulting articles consistently hit page 1 within 60 days.

4. Brand Signals

Google's trust signals have shifted toward brand. Direct traffic, branded searches, social mentions, and press coverage all influence organic ranking more than they did 18 months ago.

SEO is no longer purely a technical discipline. It's integrated with PR, content marketing, and brand strategy.

The Tactical Changes We've Made

For every client site, we now:

  1. Audit keywords by intent, removing informational targets that AI Overviews dominate
  2. Identify 3–5 "money topics" where the client has genuine expertise and defensible data
  3. Build 10–15 cornerstone pieces per money topic
  4. Run a quarterly original research report
  5. Set up brand monitoring and actively pursue relevant press coverage

This is more work than "produce content at scale." But the results are durable in a way that volume-based SEO never was.

Where We're Heading

The SEOs who will succeed in 2027 are building systems that create genuinely useful content at the intersection of brand authority and transactional intent. The path to organic traffic runs through trust, not tricks.
